Twas the middle of the summer in the year 2013
T’was the middle of the summer, just my true love there and me
Saw that light on the horizon, did not know what it would mean
Oh Lord, have mercy over me
We made it through the bombs alright, then folks started getting sick
We decided it was time to just get out of town, and quick
But by then it was too late, the Rose was on him like a tick

Left his body by the roadside, I just kept on heading west
I was tired, I was hungry, but I never stopped to rest
Prayed to God to set me on the righteous path throughout this test

The highway’s owned by diggers now, they rule it by the mile
And if you find a way to pay, you can ride with them a while
I never thought that what would save my life would be my smile

I don’t know, I couldn’t tell you what is wrong and what is right
All I know is yesterday I did survive another night
